operating system
A program that manages the complete operation of your computer or mobile device and lets you interact with it.
Windows 10
A recent version of Microsoft Windows, a popular and widely used operating system.
App
Software that lets users perform specific tasks; also called a program or an app
workstation
A computer connected to a server
server
A powerful, high-capacity computer you access using the Internet or other network; it stores files and “serves” them, that is, makes the files available to, users; usually grouped at a location called a data center.
Internet
A global collection of millions of computers linked together to share information.
intranet
An internal network site used by a group of people who work together
Windows 10 home
A simplified version of Windows that is designed primarily for home and small office users.
Windows 10 pro
A version of Windows designed for businesses and technical professionals.
Windows 10 Enterprise
A version of Windows that has the same features as Windows 10 Pro, but is designed for large enterprises where IT professionals need to manage and secure computers and mobile devices easily.
Windows 10 education
Contains many of the same features as Windows 10 Enterprise but is designed for faculty, staff, and students.
gesture
A motion you make on a touch screen with the tip of one or more fingers or with your hand.
scroll bar
Bars on the right edge (vertical scroll bar) and bottom edge (horizontal scroll bar) of a document window that let you view a document that is too large to fit on the screen at once.
Scroll arrows
Small triangular “up” and “down” arrows at each end of a scroll bar that you use to adjust your window view in small increments.
scroll box
A box in a scroll bar that you can drag, or click above and below, to display different parts of a window.
keyboard shortcuts
A key or combination of keys that you press to access a feature or perform a command, instead of using a mouse or touch gestures.
user account
Identifies to Windows the resources, such as apps and storage locations, a user can access when working with the computer.
username
In Windows and Office, a unique combination of letters or numbers that identifies a specific user.
password
A string of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols that when entered correctly, allow you to open a password-protected database or to obtain access to a Window user’s account.
picture password
A replacement for a text password that gives you access to your device; instead of typing characters, you swipe across a picture using gestures you previously set for that image.
Windows Hello
A Windows 10 login feature that accepts a fingerprint or facial scan instead of a password; only available if your device has a fingerprint reader or a high-quality camera.
user icon
A picture associated with a user name.
lock screen
A screen that appears before you sign into Windows or after your computer has been idle for a certain amount of time; displays the date and time and other information such as network and battery status.
sign-in screen
A Windows screen that lets you sign in to your user account, making the computer available for use; also called a log-in screen
