Wired and wireless networks Flashcards

1
Q

How are Wired Networks identified and what devices are they used for

A

By their use of physical wiring to connect devices
For devices Unlikely to move

Q

How do Wireless Networks carry signals and what are their Advantages+Disadvantages

A

They use radio waves
They Can be blocked by walls + Limited in range
Ideal for portable devices if in range of Wireless Access point

Q

What has the advantage in these things over wireless and wired networks : Cost,Installation difficulty,Max transmission speed,Range for reliability,Security

A

Wireless is cheaper to set up if in range of WAP
Wired requires technical knowledge in wiring so more difficult
Wired can go 1GB P/S and Wireless 50 MB P/S
Wired can go 2KM with fibre optic 100M with ethernet
Wireless less secure as physical connection not needed and signals cannot be contained in the building

Q

What is Bluetooth and what does it do and give examples that use it

A

A form of wireless communication
Allows devices to communicate with each-other like a private network
Wireless Keyboard/mouse

Q

What is Encryption give an example of it and how does it work

A

The process of disguising a message so that the only the sender and the recipient can understand it
Caesar Cypher - To encrypt plain text increase the letter by a value E.G (A+1 = B) to decode just reverse

7
Q

What is IP addressing

A

When a node wants to send a message to another node it uses the recipient IP address a switch in the network knows where the recipient is and will route accordingly

9
Q

What are static and dynamic IP adresses

A

Static-The devices IP address is always the same even after they left the network then rejoin

Dynamic-The ip address changes every time the device reconnects also known as DCHP when the device disconnects its space/address is used for another device

Q

What is Mac addressing what is it recorded in

A

The Mac address is embedded in the network interface controller it cannot be changed this makes it easy to find the address on a device on a DCHP network

Q

Name 5 other Protocols and what they do

A

TCP/IP- Transmission control /Internet protocol enables communication over the internet

HTTP/HTTPS-Hypertext transfer protocol governs communication between a webserver and client (secure) adds encryption to allow transactions to made securely

FTP-File transfer protocol govens the transmission of files across a network and the internet

SMTP-Simple mail transfer governs the sending of a email on a network to a mail server

POP/IMAP- Post office protocol internet message access protocol governs the retrieval of emails form mail servers

Q

What is Network layering and what are the 4 steps

A

To break up the sending if messages into different components and activities

Application layer-encodes/decodes message so it is understood by sender and recipient

Transport layer- message is broken down into small chunks (packets) the packets are given a number and total number of packets the recipient then arranges them and figures out how much are lost

Network layer- adds senders ip address and recipe tent the network then knows where to send the message and where it came from

Link layer- allows the transfer of packets between one node and another
