WK1 L2 The eye and the retina Flashcards
(9 cards)
Light
The stimulus for vision
Pupil
Controls the amount of light that enters the eye
retina
thin sheet of neural tissue that lines the inner wall of the eye- made up of rods and cones
Pigment epithelium
Contains enzymes and nutrients
The blind spot
there are no receptors at the place where the optic nerve leaves the eye
Fovea
a small area in the retina that only contains cones (acuity is the best in the foveal region)
Duplicity theory
that the two types of receptors operate under different conditions and have different properties
spectral sensitivity
the receptors’ sensitivity to light at each wavelength across the visible spectrum
Neural circuits
a number of neurons that are connected by synapses. The electrical signals generated in the receptors are processed as they travel through these neural circuits
