What are graphs and what are two axes of the graph?
A graph is the relation between two variables. Horizontal (x axis) and vertical (y axis)
What is directly proportional?
An increase in one variable results in an increase in another
What is indirectly proportional?
An increase in one variable results in a decrease in another
What is reciprocal relationship?
When two numbers with reciprocal relationship are multiplied together, the result is one
What are the units for length?
Cm, ft
What are the units for area?
Cm^2, ft^2 (cm x cm)
What are the units of volume?
Cm^3, ft^3 (cm x cm x cm)
What is scientific or engineering notation?
An easy method of writing very large or small numbers
What are complementary metric units?
Complementary units always matched together (Ex. Mega & Micro or Deca & Deci)
What is unit conversion?
Converting one unit to another (Ex. 12 in is the same as one foot)
What are sound waves?
Mechanical waves that require a medium to travel through (Ex. Travel through air, water, soft tissue)
What kind of waves are sound waves?
Mechanical longitudinal waves
What is the positive amplitude of wave or compression?
Where particle concentration is greatest
What is the rarefaction or negative amplitude of a wave?
Where the particle density is lowest
What is a sound cycle or wave?
What is the definition of acoustic variable? What are the 5 acoustic variables?
Changes that occur in the medium as a result of sound traveling through the medium. Amplitude, temperature (no longer used), pressure, density, distance or particle motion or vibration
What is interference, constructive and destructive interference?
Interference: when multiple beams arrive at an identical location at exactly the same time
Constructive: occurs when two waves overlap and combine to create a larger wave
Destructive: two waves are 180 degrees out of phase, combined to make a smaller amplitude wave or just cancels each other out
What is a parameter?
Is used to describe features of a sound wave
What are the parameters of CW?
Period, frequency, wavelength, propagation speed, amplitude, intensity
What are the parameters that describe the size of a wave?
Amplitude, power and intensity
What is a period?
The time it takes a wave to vibrate a single cycle or the time from the start of one cycle to the start of the next cycle
What is the definition of frequency and in what unit(s) is it measured?
The number of particular events that occur in a specific duration of time. Measured in Hz (hertz or 1/second, “per second”)
What is the relationship between period and frequency?
They’re inversely related to each other (or reciprocal). As frequency increases, period decreases. As frequency decreases, period increases.
F = 1/T or T = 1/F
What is amplitude and what is peak to peak amplitude?
Represents the size or strength of a wave. Peak to peak is the difference between maximum and minimum values of an acoustic variable.
