WNE #3 Flashcards
(34 cards)
Open Systems Interconnection OSI Model
- Physical - defines physical specifications of the network, data: bits
- Data Link - where LAN and ethernet are defined, concerned with data delivery, data: frames
- Network - responsible for determining the best route to a destination, data: packets
- Transport - responsible for transporting data, data: Segment
- Session - responsibility of establishing, maintaining, and terminating sessions
- Presentation - interacts with session and application formats data
- Application - interacts with the presentation layer
only communicate between adjoining layers, data: Protocol Data Unit (PDU)
Domain Name System DNS
resolves host names to IP addresses
Hyptertext Transfer Protocol HTTP
primary protocol used to transmit data across the internet for web pages
file transfer protocol ftp
used to transfer files to and from an FTP server
trivial ftp TFTP
used to transfer smaller files
Dynamic host configuration protocol DHCP
method of assigning TCP/IP config info to clients
lightweight directory access protocol LDAP
used to query a directory service
post office protocol POP3
email protocol used to retrieve email
simple mail transfer protocol SMTP
email protocol used to send email
internet message access protocol IMAP
used to receive emails messages
simple network management protocol SNMP
used to manage network devices such as routers and managed switches
server message block SMB
file transfer protocol used on microsoft networks
simplex
session layer, data is only sent one way
half duplex
data can be sent both ways but only one way at a time
full duplex
data can be sent and received at the same time
transmission control protocol TCP
provides guaranteed delivery of data
user datagram protocol UDP
provides a best effort of delivering data
IPv4
addressing protocol using 32 bit addresses
IPv6
addressing protocol using 128 bits
address resolution protocol
resolves IP addresses to the physical address or the Media Access Control (MAC) address
internet group multicast protocol IGMP
used for multicasting traffic
internet control message protocol ICMP
used for error messages and diagnostic reporting
internet protocol security IPSec
security protocol used to secure IP traffic
routing information protocol RIP
used by routers in internal networks
