during the 19th century women were not equal to men in a social or political setting. women were viewed as not important enough to vote however changes developed in the late 19th century and early 20th century to change this.

the sufferagette campaigns were a factor in women receiving the vote in 1918

some methods they used to spread awareness were smashing windows, pouring acid in letterboxes, arson attacks and sending letter bombs to mps

this helped women gain the vote in 1918 as it helped the sufferagettes suceed at their aim of publicity making national headlines regularly and were discussed in parliament.

in the early 20th century marion dunlop started a hunger strike campaign in prison designed to embarrass the government.

hunger strikers were violently force fed by doctors gaining massive publicity for the cause of womens sufferage. this also led to the public feeling sorry for the women and gained sympathy for the cause of women’s suffrage.

however many historians believe that this campaign had a negative impact on women receiving the vote as it showed women as not fit to look after themselves so therefore not fit to vote.

in evaluation it can be argued that the sufferagettes campaigns were a factor in women receiving sufferage as it forced the government to take action. for example the cat and mouse act was passed in the early 20th century to allow hunger strikers out of prison temporarily to allow their health to improve. however campaigns of the sufferagists also gained the support of the public and some mps for the vote.

sufferagists believed in peaceful tactics to win the vote for women. they campaigned using meetings, pamphlets and petitions.

this helped women gain the vote as they impressed many people male and female including politicians. it showed they were intelligent capable and mature.

however many historians claim that the sufferagists campaign was slow moving and failed to turn the heads of the anti-sufferage politicians and they were never able to gain the same publicity of the sufferagettes.

in evaluation the suffragists campaign was of some importance to women gaining the vote in 1918 because membership was around 50,000 by 1914 however pre war changes such as the increased status of women in society was also of importance in women gaining suffrage.

towards the end of the 19th century things were improving for women in terms of law and gaining more opportunities.

in the late 19th century universal primary education became compulsory for boys and girls and later became free so there was no longer a good reason to not educate girls.

this helped women gain the vote as it showed the public there was nothing to fear in giving women the right to vote. it reduced the suspicion that women were too dumb and immature for politics.

however even though women were making progress they were still expected to leave their jobs if they were married.

upon evaluation it can be argued that pre war education and law changes were important in women gaining suffrage as it opened up higher status career opportunities for women like nursing and teaching. on the other hand war work was more important as war effort of women as this proved how capable women were.

around 1/4 of the world was part of the british empire however more democratic countries like new Zealand in the late 19rh century had granted women the vote much earlier.

this helped women get the vote as the fact that women had been given sufferage in countries like new zealand added pressure to the british government to do the same.

however it was likely that in times of war britains politicians were far more focused on that than the sufferage of other countries.
