PRESIDENTIAL ACTION:
FDR: Frances Perkins was appointed as Secretary of Labour in 1933, alongside Ruth Owen as 1st female ambassador & Florence Allen as 1st fem. appeal court judge in 34.
This was important as it showed that women were now becoming a valued voice in politics & had slightly more influence than previously.
Reagan: 1981 Sandra Day O’Connor = 1st female SC justice
Although demonstrates that women were now increasingly trusted with policymaking & allowed into male-dominated fields, still show the limitations present for women.
The nearly 50 year gap between the appointment of these women demonstrates that the battle for women’s political rights was arduous.
