A surgical cut of the vagina during the 2nd stage of birth
What are the benefits of an episiotomy?
Aid in difficult delivery and preventing the rupture of the pelvic floor

What are the side effects of an episiotomy?
Infection
Pain increases

What is the APGAR scoring system?
A quick test performed on the baby at 1 and 5 min after birth
What is the 1min score of the APGAR scale?
Determines how well the newborn tolerated the birthing process
What is the 5min score of the APGAR scale?
Tells doctor how well the newborn is doing outside of the mother’s womb
What is an epidural?
An anesthetic is introduced into the space around the dura mater of the spinal cord in childbirth to produce loss of sensation below the waist
What are the side effects if an epidural?
Shivering
Backache
Difficulty urinating
Ringing of ears
What is pre eclampsia?
A condition where there’s a high BP and sometimes fluid retention and proteinuria
Usually occurs in the 3rd trimester
Also more frequent if woman is carrying twins and I’d it’s first pregnancy
Risk factors are old age,HPT obesity
What is diastasis recti?
When the return abdominis muscles in the midline at Linea alba separate
What causes varicose veins in a pregnant woman?
The uterine weight increases
What could treat varicose veins?
Elastic stokings
Lying of the left side
Keeping legs elevated and not crossing them
Light exercises
What are Kegal exercises?
Pelvic floor exercises
What are the benefits of legal exercises?
Increase blood flow and nerve supply to pelvic region
Recover from physical stress of childbirth
Improve sexual response and function
What are Antenatal classes?
Classes that are supportive for the bathing nothing and partner to learn about birth and how to look after newborn
What are the objectives of the antenatal classes?
Enhance woman’s sense of confidence
Promote,protect and maintain the health of the mother during pregnancy
Forsee complications and prevent them
Remove anxiety and dread associated with delivery

What is dystocia?
A non progressive labour
What do the APGAR score of 0-3 indicate?
That the baby is severely depressed
What does the APGAR score of 4-6 indicate?
Moderately depressed
What does the APGAR score of 7-10 indicate?
Excellent condition
What are the two types of LBP in a mother?
The pain that occurs in the lumbar region at waist level and sacroilliac back pain at the back of the pelvis
