Q

MDF

A

Primarily made from wood waste in the form of wood chips that are subjected to heat and pressure in order to soften the fibres and produce fine, fluffy and light weight pulp which is then mixed with a synthetic resin adhesive.

Easy to work with - no grain
Available in large sheets
Absorbs water
Used in school furniture etc

Q

Plywood

A

Made by gluing thin sheets of wood together at 90 degree angles
This is so the grains are running in opposite directions, increasing overall strength of plywood
Always odd number of layers so top and bottom grain run in the same direction
Very stable - does not warp or distort
Durable

Not waterproof - can make layers come apart
Difficult to machine -many grains

Attic flooring
Stud wall

Q

Block board

A

Consists of thin sheets of either mdf or veneer with planks of softwoods in the centre (softwood sandwich)

Strong over long distances
Inexpensive but looks well - veneer added
Difficult to work with/manufacture due to different grains in softwoods

17
Q

Hard board

A

Wood fibre is obtained from exploded wood fibres/ wood chips and pulp that have been highly compressed

Similar to mdf but much more denser, stronger and harder

Absorbs moisture easily - unsuitable for outside

Has been used in furniture and construction industry
Become less popular due to environmental standards

18
Q

Chipboard

A

Made from wood particles, chips, flakes and shavings.
Bonded together with synthetic resin adhesive

Often used in kitchen units, cupboards etc,
Can be Veneered to give it an attractive finish

If it gets wet it becomes waterlogged, swells and breaks down.

19
Q

Veneer

A

Process of applying a thin sheet of decorative wood to the surface of another material eg. Manufactured boards
This is done to improve the overall appearance of a relatively cheap wood

Can also get synthetic/polymer veneers

20
Q

A
Mdf
