Alliteration
A type of figurative language where all of or most of the words in a sentence have the same sound or the same first letter. (Peter piper pickles)
Allegory
Representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms
Allusion
A passing or casual reference, a mention of something either directly or by implication. (He’s a real Romeo with the ladies)
Anaphora
The repetition of a word or phrase in the beginning of phrases, clause or sentences for rhetorical effect or poetic effects. (I have a dream… I have a dream)
Aphorism
A brief statement that is made in a matter of fact time to state an opinion that is generally understood to be universal truth. (Money can buy you a dog but only happiness can make him wag his tail)
Apostrophe
In poetry, an apostrophe is a figure of speech in which the poet addresses an absent person, an abstract idea, or a thing. (Die not poor death)
Appeal to Authority
Using an authority as evidence in your argument when the authority is not really an authority on the facts relevant to the argument.
Colloquial
The use of informal words, phrases or even slang in a piece of writing; usually used by authors to give their work a sense of realism. (He went bananas for the new iPhone)
Chiasmus
The term for a rhetorical device in which a sentence or phrase is followed by another sentence or phrase that reverses the structure and order of the first one. (Love to live or live to love)
Concession
An acknowledgment that an opposing argument may be true or reasonable. In a strong argument. A concession is usually accompanied by a refutation challenging the validity of the opposing argument.
Connotation
The abstract feeling or idea that gives a word more meaning beyond its literal definition. Words and phrases can have a positive or negative meaning and sometimes both.
Deduction
Deductive reasoning, also deductive logic, or logical deduction is the process of reasoning from one or more statements.
Denotation
generally defined as literal or dictionary meanings of a word
Ad Hominen
Directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining.
Euphemism
A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blant.
Extended Metaphor
The term extended metaphor refers to a comparison between 2 unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph or lines in a poem.
Fallacy
A mistaken belief, especially one based on insured argument. Faulty reasoning; misleading or unsound argument.
Hasty (quickly) Generalization
Drawing a conclusion based on a small size, rather than looking at statistics that are much more in line with typical of average situation.
Hyperbole
Obvious and intentional exaggeration.
Jargon
Special words or expressions that are used by a particular group that is difficult for others to understand.
