What are the 4 types of noun?
Concrete; Abstract; Collective; Proper
What are the types of adjective?
Base; Comparative: Superlative
What are the Open-Class word types?
Nouns; Adjectives; Adverbs; Verbs
What are the Closed-Class word types?
Prepositions; Determiners; Pronouns; Conjunctions
Types of Verbs:
Dynamic and stative
What is a modal auxillery verb?
A verb to add possibility/ probability/ necessity/ obligation (eg ought)
What is euphemism?
A more mild or indirect way of phrasing an unpleasant/ taboo concept: e.g passed on
What is dyphemism?
The use of a vulgar/ harsh way of phrasing; e.g kicked the bucket
What are the 7 language levels?
Lexis; semantics; pragmatics; phonology; graphology; discourse; grammar
What is discourse?
The structure of any text longer than a sentence
What is pragmatics?
What we actually mean when talking; depending on context
How are lexical and semantic fields different?
Lexical is related words (gun, weapon, bullet); semantics are not set and more subjective (gun, death, violence)
What does polysemic mean?
Words that have a range of meanings (e.g “set” can mean a set of paints, putting something down, jelly ‘setting’)
What is syntax?
The order of elements in a clause/ sentence
What is a denotative meaning?
The ‘official’ meaning of a word, agreed upon by most of the population; most set in a dictionary
What is connotative meaning?
Meaning or association attached to a word, more subjective than denotative meaning; e.g green association with nature, or gross-ness
What is a morpheme?
The smallest unit of meaning (e.g there are 2 separate morphemes in “birds”- ‘bird’ and ‘s’)
What is the function of an adverb?
They can modify verbs- when and how this takes place- AND adjectives- how much
Pre- vs Post- modifiers:
The modification coming before or after; “the leaf fell slowly” is post-modifying the verb VS “the leaf slowly fell” pre-modifying, which puts more emphasis on it
