Work and power Flashcards
When is Work done?
Work is done when a force moves an object in the direction in which the force acts.
Work done Formula
work done = force x distance moved (in the direction of the force)
What is weight?
- Weight is a measure of the gravitational attraction on a body acting towards the centre of the earth.
- A mass of 1 kg has a weight of about 10 N on Earth.
Weight Formula
weight = mass x gravitational field strength
What is Power?
Power is the rate at which work is done.
Power Formula
Power = work done/ time taken (s)
work done (p) Eq.
work done = power x time (s)
time taken Eq.
time taken (s) = work done / power
1 MW to W
1,000,000
When is a person’s power greater?
A person’s power is greater when they run than when they walk.
Some cars are more powerful than others…
- They travel faster and cover the same distance in a shorter time and require more fuel. The power rating of a car depends on its engine size. More powerful cars have a greater fuel consumption.
- Fuel is expensive and a car with a high fuel consumption is expensive to run.
How do fuels pollute the environment?
- Car exhaust gases, especially carbon dioxide, are harmful.
- Carbon dioxide is also a major source of greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change
Power 1
Power = (force x distance) / time
Power 2
Power = force x speed
Power 3
power = force x distance/time
