Q

Describe the law of conservation of energy in words and mathematically

A

In any transfer or transformation, the total energy remains unchanged. The energy before the transfer or transformation is the same as the energy after the transfer or transformation. Σ𝐸_i =Σ𝐸_f.

Q

What is the mechanical energy.

A

The total energy of a system or object. It’s equal to kinetic + potential energy

7
Q

What is work and its formula

A

Work is the energy transferred to an object, usually by applying a force parallel to its displacement:
π‘Š=Δ𝐸=𝐸_f βˆ’πΈ_i
π‘Š=𝐹𝑠

8
Q

How is positive and negative work done?

A

If the force is applied in the same direction as the displacement, positive work is done; if it is applied in the opposite direction, negative work is done.

9
Q

What is power, it’s formula and S.I units?

A

Power is the rate at which (i.e. how quickly) work is done:
𝑃=π‘Š/𝑑 = Δ𝐸/𝑑

11
Q

What is elastic collision?

A

In an elastic collision, total kinetic energy is conserved: none is lost to heat / sound / deformation / etc.

12
Q

Inelastic collision?

A

In an inelastic collision, total energy is conserved, but some kinetic energy is converted to a different form (see examples above).
