Work, energy, power Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is energy?
Energy is the ability of a physical object / system to cause change.
What are the 2 types of energy?
Kinetic and Potential
S.I unit for energy
Joules (J)
Describe the law of conservation of energy in words and mathematically
In any transfer or transformation, the total energy remains unchanged. The energy before the transfer or transformation is the same as the energy after the transfer or transformation. Ξ£πΈ_i =Ξ£πΈ_f.
What is the mechanical energy.
The total energy of a system or object. Itβs equal to kinetic + potential energy
Formula for kinetic and potential energy?
Ek = 1/2mv^2 and Ep = mgh
What is work and its formula
Work is the energy transferred to an object, usually by applying a force parallel to its displacement:
π=ΞπΈ=πΈ_f βπΈ_i
π=πΉπ
How is positive and negative work done?
If the force is applied in the same direction as the displacement, positive work is done; if it is applied in the opposite direction, negative work is done.
What is power, itβs formula and S.I units?
Power is the rate at which (i.e. how quickly) work is done:
π=π/π‘ = ΞπΈ/π‘
What are the 2 collision types?
Elastic and inelastic.
What is elastic collision?
In an elastic collision, total kinetic energy is conserved: none is lost to heat / sound / deformation / etc.
Inelastic collision?
In an inelastic collision, total energy is conserved, but some kinetic energy is converted to a different form (see examples above).
What is a perfectly elastic collsiion?
In a perfectly inelastic collision, the two objects stay together after the impact.
