What are PONS
Periodic Operating Notices
They come out quarterly (March, June, September, December) on the first Saturday of the month.
They have important updates about the sectional appendix and the rule book.
What does the dagger mean
Warning boards and indicators will move as work progresses
What does one black line mean
A new or amended item
What does 3 asterisks mean
It means that it will not appear in future issues
What does 20/40 mean

Who do you contact if you have any issues and what would they be.
You would contact a train crew control for
- lateness
- sickness
- lost ID/TRANSEC
- the hidden rule could be broken, late breaks or delayed services
What is the hidden rule
The hidden rule states that:
- you can’t work more than 12 hours in a day
- you have to have 12 hour break between shifts
- you can’t work more than 13 days consecutively
- you can’t work more than 72 hours in a 7 day period

What are WONS
WONS are weekly operating notices and they come out every Friday and are in place from 00:01hrs Saturday.
Conductors have to carry them as part of conductor equipment
Gives important information about any infrastructure changes or engineering works

Signal passed at danger
What are the 2 sections of PONS
They are:
1) amendments to the national operation publication
2) miscellaneous instructions and notices

What needs to be in place for a shift swap
1) both staff need to sign the same route and train
2) the hidden rule can not be broken

Emergency speed restrictions (unplanned due to infrastructure or engineering works)
Emergency engineering works (unplanned due to infrastructure or engineering works)
Diversions which cause a route changes
Equipment failure - signalling and crossing failures
Registers - index of contents in date order
Severe weather warnings - accompanied by BSR/ESR
What is key about the new notice case
Can stay in there for 4 weeks, then moved to general case
Planned engineering works
Instructions from manager teams
Changes to method of work
Performance figures and company news
What is key about the general notice case
Notices moved from the new case to general after 4 weeks, stays in this case for 4 weeks and can be re-registered or moved to permanent case
