Working With Proteins Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are the 5 main moral theories in animal research?
Contractarianism
Utilitarianism
relationship
animal rights
Respect nature
What is contractarianism?
Basically, contracts between people govern their interactions
What is utilitarianism?
Actions are right if they are useful or beneficial to the majority
What is the relational view?
Importance of our relationships to animals
Puts animals in a sort of hierarchy
Considers how out treatment of animals might affect our treatment of humans
What is the animal rights view?
Directly opposes animal use
Animals should have the same rights as humans - not to suffer or be killed for human benefit
What is the respect for nature view?
Moral value of species - respecting animals
Against genetic modification and selective breeding
Why are in vitro experiments good?
Lots of different forms
Cheap
Quick
Why are in vitro experiments bad?
Cannot fully replicate a living system
So therefore not necessarily physiologically applicable
What are the drawbacks with using computer programming?
Basic understanding needed before programming is possible
Limited processing power
Why use animals in research?
Similar systems to humans
Most human diseases exist in ≥1 other specie s
Side effects and efficacy only exist in vivo
Whole system complexity of interactions only replicable in vivo
What is the animals (scientific procedure) act of 1986 say?
Permits the use of animals in scientific procedures
Regulates the use of protected animals
What is a protected animal?
Any living vertebrate and any living cephalopod
What are the types of licenses you can get for animal work from the home office?
Establishment licence
Project licence
Personal licence
When are licences approved by the Home Office?
Benefit outweighs cost
No non-animal alternative
Minimum number of possible animals used
Using animals with the lowest pain sensitivity
Minimal pain
Research premises have necessary facilities to care for animals
Who does the local ethical review board consist of?
Scientists and lay people
What are the 3R’s?
Replacement
Reduction
Refinedment
