Workshop 3 - Communnicating Science Flashcards

1
Q

the peer review process:

A

the process of evaluating submissions to an academic journal

uses strict criteria with panel of experts assigned by an editor working on the same subject area

authors can get feedback and a chance to respond, edit and sometimes ass additional work to their papers

meta analysis:

A

•Similarly to secondary research and systematic reviews, combines and analyses the literature using repeatable methods to find, select, and synthesise all available evidence.

•Strictly speaking, a meta-analysis is a technique to synthesize results from multiple studies.

•It is a statistical analysis that combines the results of two or more studies, usually to estimate an effect size.

Q

why is communicating science important?

A

•If scientists can’t communicate their work, it’s much more likely to get misrepresented (clickbait titles, misinformation, out of context use)

•Academic careers rely on these skills for teaching, presenting at conferences, applying for jobs, applying for funding

•Learning how to explain something to different audiences (especially very simple and concise explanations) will reinforce your own understanding
