What are the four main causes of WWI?
Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism (MAIN); Triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Why did Japan pursue imperialism?
To gain power and respect like Western nations, grow economically/militarily, and dominate East Asia.
What was the goal of WWI propaganda?
To increase support for the war, encourage enlistment, and portray the enemy negatively.
How did the Treaty of Versailles affect Germany?
Blamed Germany, imposed harsh penalties, limited military, hurt economy; U.S. emerged stronger.
What caused WWII to begin?
Unresolved WWI issues, rise of Hitler, and Germany’s invasion of Poland.
What caused the Russian Revolution?
Economic hardship, class inequality, poor leadership, and war losses.
How did the Russian Revolution affect WWI?
Russia withdrew from the war to focus on internal problems.
How did Hitler gain and keep power?
Powerful speaker, blamed Jews, weak Weimar Republic, promised to restore Germany.
How did Mussolini take power in Italy?
Led the Black Shirts, threatened the king, and seized power during the March on Rome.
What is appeasement? Give an example.
Giving in to avoid conflict; Britain and France let Hitler take Czechoslovakia.
What is fascism?
Authoritarian government with total control, extreme nationalism, no personal freedoms.
Why did the U.S. bomb Japan?
To end WWII quickly after Japan refused to surrender; bombs dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
What were the Nuremberg Laws?
Anti-Jewish laws that stripped Jews of rights in Nazi Germany.
What is genocide?
Mass killing of a group based on race, religion, or ethnicity.
What was the Holocaust?
Nazi Germany’s genocide of 6 million Jews and others during WWII.
What happened on D-Day?
Allied invasion of Nazi-controlled France on June 6, 1944.
What were the Nuremberg Trials?
Trials of Nazi leaders for war crimes after WWII.
Who fought in the Chinese Civil War?
Communists vs. Nationalists; Communists won, founding the PRC.
What is Zionism?
Belief that Jews should have their own homeland.
What is communism?
System with no classes; everything is shared equally under government control.
What was the Cold War?
Tension between U.S. and USSR over nuclear weapons and global influence.
What was the Iron Curtain?
Invisible divide between democratic Europe and communist USSR.
What was the Truman Doctrine?
U.S. policy to stop the spread of communism.
What was the Marshall Plan?
U.S. aid to rebuild Europe after WWII.
