Political maps show man made things like countries, states, cities, roads, and canals
What is the main purpose of a physical map?
Physical maps show mostly natural things like oceans, rivers, mountains, plains, and elevation
How is a special purpose map different from political or physical maps?
Special purpose maps focus on just one main thing

Groundwater is fresh water that lies beneath the earth’s surface and supplies wells and springs
Rock is constantly being worn down and built back up. What are three things that cause the weathering of rock?
Weathering is the process that breaks down rocks. It can be caused by water, wind, ice, chemical reactions, tree roots, and other forces
What formed the Great Lakes and when did it occur?
Glaciers carved out the Great Lakes during the last Ice Age and left fresh water behind
What are sheet glaciers? What two locations on earth do you find the largest one?
Sheet glaciers are sheets of ice that cover large areas. Greenland and Antarctica are covered by sheet glaciers also called ice caps
What are mountain glaciers? When mountain glaciers cause erosion what do they form?
Mountain glaciers form when fallen snow in mountains builds up and turns into ice. They form U-shaped valleys from grinding out the area between hills or mountains
If the earth’s move apart, what material comes through the opening?
Magma comes out of the opening. Once it comes out, We call it lava
What is the name of the movement of plates as pressure builds and then there is a sudden release of this energy?
An earthquake
When cities started to develop, where did they usually develop?
Large cities usually started as settlements along lakes and rivers where people would have a constant supply of water
