Globalization
an increase in the interconnectedness & interaction between people, governments,
and businesses from different countries around the world
Ex) Many US products being made in China instead of locally because of increased trade relations
Pros of globalization:
- export of goods that people wouldn’t have access to otherwise
- aid given from around the world when one country is struggling
- lower prices, more cost effective
- develops economics and jobs
Cons of globalization:
- problem in one country has an increased chance to spread & impact globally
- countries are less independent
- negative environmental impact with all the shipping
- smaller local businesses can’t compete with global businesses like Amazon
- creation of sweatshops, child labor factories, etc.
Describe the UN
global org with 193 member countries,
created in 1945
What is the universal delcaration of human rights?
It is a document made by the UN General Assembly that officiates the rights & freedoms of all
human beings.
Gen Assembly
Every nation is there and has one vote to use on proposed resolutions, the
resolution discussions are largely diplomatic because they aren’t legally binding
Security Council
It makes decisions on things concerning international peace like authorizing military intervention or preventing nuclear programs. It has 10 rotating members and 5 permanent ones, and can impose sanctions.
Secretary General
The UN’s top official, elected by the P5. They act as an unbiased secretary of all Executive Council meetings and General Assembly meetings. He/she can serve a maximum of two
five-year terms and is the only person that can call warring countries to the peace table.
Limitations of the UN
- None of their resolutions are legally binding
- Any bill can be vetoed by one objection from a P5 member
- There are only 15 members of the Security council at one time
- Depends on the financial contributions of willing member nations

Antonio Guterres and he is responsible for budget, staff, and international agreements
How does the UN try to address world crises?
- deploy peacekeepers
- facillitate negotiations between countries
- impose sanctions
- provide aid
How effective is the UN?
The UN’s effectiveness is hindered by its inability to legally enforce its resolutions and by conflict
between members of the P5. For example, the Russia-Ukraine and Gaza crisis continue to occur.
But the UN has also effectively provided humanitarian aid during multiple disasters like the Haiti earthquake or Horn of Africa famine.

The EU is a union of 27 European countries & its purpose is to foster peace and stability in Europe and promote economic cooperation & integration.

World Bank?
The World Bank is an IGO and its purpose is to provide financial assistance to developing countries. They try to reduce poverty, promote economic development, and improve living standards.
IMF? (International Monetary Fund)
The IMF is an IGO that promotes global economic cooperation and stability. It provides financial aid to countries facing economic problems.
WTO?
The World Trade Organization exists to allow for free trade & set the rules for international trade.
It acts to reduce trade barriers and facilitate trading between countries.
NATO?
NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military alliance of 30 North American &
European countries. It provides collective defense against potential security threats & promotes
stability and cooperation in the North Atlantic area.

A microfinance is a financial service (small loan, saving, etc.) given to low-income individuals or groups. For example, the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh gives out microloans to rural women so they can start small businesses.
