  • June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were shot and killed while visiting Saravejo
  • Assassin was from a Serbian nationalist group, the Black Hand
  • Austria-Hungary invades Serbia -> Russia defends Serbia -> Germany defends Austria-Hungary -> Britain and France defend Russia -> in over a month, Europe is at war
