Wound Healing Flashcards
(22 cards)
Stitches
Surgical incision
Blister
Burn
Laceration
Cut
Traumatic type of wound
Injury to underlying tissue (skin remains intact)
Surgical type of wound
Caused by medical procedure
Disease type of wound
A benign, maligant tumour
Therma type of wound
A burn
What is an acute wound?
Happens rapidly and heals with a specified time frame
What is a chronic wound?
Open wounds that incur large loss of tissue. Not healing as expected
Thermal type of wound
A burn
What does epithelial and connective tissue have the ability to do?
Self-repair
What is damaged tissue replaced by?
Scar tissue
What do phagocytise cells do?
Remove necrotic and damaged tissue and cells
What helps close up the gap where injury occurred?
Collagen fibres
What are the 4 stages of wound healing?
Haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, maturation
What is vasoconstriction phase in haemostasis stage
Blood vessels constrict, causing wound to close, reducing/stopping bleeding
What is the phase of formation of platelet plug in haemostasis
Platelets stick to collagen fibres within vessel walls, causes a plug to form, platelets release prostaglandins
What is the phase of biochemical response in haemostasis?
Clot develops, clot prevents pathogens from entering wound and releases fibrin - fibrin restores tissue and attaches to platelets
What happens in the inflammation stage?
Neutrophils and macrophages clean up debris from wound area. Vasodilation to increase blood flow. Mediators contribute to characteristics
What happens in proliferation stage?
Formation of granulation tissue. Fibroblasts lay down collagen to renew strength.
What happens in maturation stage?
Strengthen and refine newly formed tissue
Factors affecting wound healing
Nutrition/hydration, medications, infection, age, illnesses
