Wound Healing & Osseointegration Flashcards

1
Q

What happens to the alveolar ridge and soft tissues after an extraction?

A

Alveolar process changes shape.
Soft tissue changes, as the alveolar ridge shrinks, there is often a narrowing of the width of the band of attached gingiva in this area.

Q

Does an implant stop ridge resorption?

A

Doesnt seem to work that implants stimulate bone placement and stop ridge resorption

Q

What are the principles of osseo-integration?

A

Bleeding and coagulum formation
Ingrowth of vessels and deposition of Osteoid from osteoblasts
Provisional matrix development
Irregular woven bone made
Maturation of bone forming organised lamellar bone

Q

What is the purpose of roughening the implant surface before placing?

A

Roughening the surface (electrolytic etching, acid etching, plasma coating, blasting particles) accelerates the integration process and potentially give better initially implant stability and faster placement.

Higher levels of fluoride in the outer implant surface encourages more rapid osseointegration.
