What is culture?
Define it using the words “learned” and “shared”.
Culture is a learned way of living shared by a group of people
You are taught your culture from when you are born
Define “ethnocentrism”.
Ethnocentrism is believing your culture is better than all other cultures
What does an anthropologist do?
Studies human behavior
Asks “why is that group of people acting like that?”
When does ethnocentrism begin and how does it end?
It starts by a lack of experience with people from other cultures
Ends when understanding and appreciation of other cultures begins

What “cultural universals” are…
They are the needs that are common to all cultures of the world
Every culture has the same needs
Yet, their way of fulfilling their needs may be different
How the size of the U.S. compares to the size of Europe
Every country of Europe can fit inside the U.S.
Why there is more than one culture in the U.S.
People immigrated from other places and brought their culture with them
Cultures also formed locally over time within regions of the U.S. since the U.S. is so big

The climate
The Midwest compared to the South is much colder in both the winter and summer months
The geography/ land
The US is so expansive and there are many different terrains that are a part of the different regions of the United States.

Language
In the South they say Alligator pear and we say Avocado. Also we say hey, they say howdy
Transportation
In the West, they travel by horseback- we travel by car, train or bus

Education
Education in the US is measured by literacy rate. The rank of regions from best to worst education is Northeast, West, Midwest, Southwest, and Southeast.
Economics
Cost of living in urban areas is high; a dollar can buy less
Cost of living in rural areas is lower; a dollar can buy more
Cost of living is used to compare how expensive it is to live in one state compared to another state
Clothing
In each region of the US there are different temperatures during each season of the year. People wear what best suits the temperature of where they live.
Food
In the Northeast soft serve as we know it is called Creemee. Sprinkles are known as Jimmies which you may add to your creemee.
Christmas traditions
Southwest popular food is tamales
In Louisiana on on Christmas Eve people light fires on the river bank so papa Noel can find the children’s homes
