WW1 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What were the MAIN long term causes of the first world war?
Militarism (where the country felt they needed a strong army) alliances (countries were pressured to help their allies in the war so it went worldwide) imperialism (the countries felt to be powerful they needed to invade countries) and finally nationalism (loyalty and devotion to a nation that meant people wouldn’t mind fighting)
What were the MAIN short term causes of the first world war?
Assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand
Recruitment: Why did men join up to fight in the first world war?
Because of peer pressure and to protect their family and countries
Trench warfare: What was fighting like in the first world war?
The soldiers had to fight in wet trenches and many died or were badly injured by the wet conditions rotting their skin (trench foot)
Who were the forgotten armies of the first world war?
Portugal, Brazil, Austria Hungary and Russia
What injuries and treatment did a first world war soldier face?
Trench foot, treated with bed rest and wash, broken limbs (legs) treated with the Thomas Splint (corrected the bone) and wounds were treated with antibac solutions, mustard gas would not be treatable really and they would wear gas masks and use antibiotics on the blisters
Q2: The Treaty of Versailles: How fair was the treaty of Versailles?
It was slightly unfair, it meant that Germany could not have a lot of ammunition or planes but mainly hugely limited armed forces, mainly they had to pay large reparations when the country was still very poor
What were the MAIN long and short term causes of the second world war?
Long term: The country was starving as a result of very low on money after treaty of Versailles and wall street crash destroyed economy, the worldwide economic depression, Hitler coming into power years before, failure of the league of nations
Short term: Hitler had started going against the terms of the treaty of Versailles, building up the army bigger to use it, Hitler lied to people and went against what he said previously, forcing the war to start (Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia when he claimed he would not)
Operation Dynamo (Dunkirk): To what extent was Dunkirk a triumph?
To a large extent it was a triumph because even though they had to leave the battlefield and stop the fighting, and not all soldiers were evacuated they managed to evacuate 300,000 British and allied soldiers, and Winston Churchill only expected 40,000. When soldiers got back their morale was back up so when they went back to war it began to turn in their favour as people at home in Britain were helping as well.
Q3: What were the long and short term causes of Hitler’s rise to power?
Long term: failure of the communists reign, showing weakness (soviets being attacked in the streets by Nazis to make them seem weak), the great depression and need for Brot und Arbeiten (work and bread (food) as they were lacking from the treaty and great depression) aka. Hitler’s offerings/claims
Short term: Hitler’s strength in public speaking, Nazi propaganda being pushed everywhere, the building up of hatred for Jews (old claims they were paedophiles etc)
How did Hitler establish control in Nazi Germany?
The gestapo scaring ordinary civilians and attacking the communists, his public speaking, his claims of no more war guilt and a more powerful country, his claims of food and jobs (brot und arbeiten)
What was life like for the German youth in Nazi Germany?
Constant pushing of Nazi agenda, questions about bombing countries, getting rid of disabled people and Jews, for boys lots of PE to make them good soldiers and girls lots of housework education to make them good bearers of children to be soldiers. Being forced to go to Nazi clubs all day on weekends so they were only taught Hitler’s way and spent as little time away from Hitler’s close followers as possible, going camping and strength training always wearing Nazi uniform because hitler wanted to indoctrinate their young undeveloped minds (brainwash them) BOYS CLUBS WERE HITLERJUGEND AND GIRLS CLUBS WERE Band of German Maidens
