1914, Franz Ferdinand was murdered by Gavrilo Princip in Bosnia
this event triggered the alliance’s to go to war
life in the trenches
dangerous cos of the mud
rats,poor hygine,lice,trench foot,poisonous gas attacks
many bodies never found
what happened in the battle of the somme?
General Haig planned to break through german trenches
1)digging tunnels+putting explosives in
2)firing 1.7mil shells and german trench
3)marching soldiers across no mans land to capture german trenches
plan failed as germans sheltered in deep doug outs
1st july 1916, 20000 british soldiers died
40000 wounded or missing
was General Haig the ‘butcher of the somme’?
some say so as his plan failed
some say he didn’t care ab soldies lives
others say his tactics helped wear down the german army
after the war he set up a poppy apeal to help injured soldiers
1mil lost their lives
everyone has to expect men to die as its a war
why did people join the war?

how did ww1 affect women of britain?
jobs in factories-many worked in dangerous conditions making ammunition
jobs on farms-many joined womans land army and helped produce food
women did the jobs of men-
drivers
mechanic
bus driver
delivering coal
women proved themselves in ww1
in 1918 they were allowed to vote for the first time
why was it a world war?
European countries had empires.
This led to fighting taking place
around the world. Soldiers from
across Britain’s empire fought in
WWI.
how did ww1 end?
ended at 11am on November 11th 1918
a peace deal was agreed in 1919 (Treaty Of Versailles)
treated germany harshly+caused anger
germanys army was cut to 100,000 men,wasnt allowed an air force
germanys empire was given Britain+france
germany had to pay £6.6billion in compensation
germany had to accept the blame for starting ww1
