How did the government get a bigger army ?
- when war broke out Britain only had a small army, the government began a massive recruitment drive with posters etc. in every town. The press also produced stories about Germany to influence them to join war
What was the conscription and when?
- 1916
- the government introduced a conscription that meant all men between 18 and 40 must register
- not everyone liked the conscription, 50 MPs voted against it and religions did also
What was DORA
- in 1914 the government passed the defence of the realm act
- took control of all food supplies
- took control of the coal industry
- took control of all industries related to war
- allowed government to take control of media through censorship
What and when was the munitions crisis?
- in 1915 there was a shortage of shells, bullets and armaments
- DLG was made minister of munitions
- he forced workers to stay where they were most skilled, as a result 235,000 went on strike ( 1916)
- he let women into the work force
- he opened munition factories which gave women jobs and supplied the war with enough munition
What and when was the Women’s Land army ?
- February 1917
- German U-boats sank merchant ships ( carried weat)
- as a result Britain were running low on food
- the land army recruited women as farm workers
What is censorship ?
Changing or blocking things which can completely change the meaning

To make you feel like you should join and making you feel welcome
What is black propaganda?
Making you feel guilty that you haven’t enlisted
How did the battle of Somme change the view of many people ?
Many people didn’t like war after 500,000 soldiers died for a couple of square km of land
What did the president say which was his opinion on the war?
- if the people really knew (the truth) the war would be stopped tomorrow. But of course they don’t and can’t know.
