How did the geography of ancient Greece lead to the development of independent City-States?
The mountains, seas and islands that make up Greece forced city-states to develop with separate kings, laws and customs.
Describe who Socrates is and how he taught students?
Using the Socratic Method, Socrates always answered questions with more questions trying to uncover “the truth”.
How did Socrates’ life end?
Socrates was found guilty of corrupting the youth and heresy (speaking bad of the gods) and was sentenced to drink Hemlock (poison).
Who was Aristotle and how did he impact Alexander the Great?
Aristotle was Alexander’s tutor and taught him about different cultures and people. Led to Alexander allowing the people he conquered to keep their own customs and beliefs
Who was Alexander the Great and how did he become an emperor?
Son of King Philip II of Macedonia who took the throne after his father was assassinated.
What was life like in Athens?
Athenians believed in culture, art, music, theater, architecture, poetry, philosophy. They had an open port in which people from all over the “world” traded with them.
What was life like in Sparta?
Trained in warfare in order to do whatever it took to keep Sparta independent. Focus on preparation for war.
What was the Peloponnesian War?
War between Athens and Sparta that last 27 years and only ended because Athens was hit hard by the plague and was forced to surrender.
Who was Achilles?
Son of Thetis the sea nymph and King Pelias, raised by the Centaur Chiron. He was a hero and invincible in battle except for the weakness of his heel.
What was the Trojan War? Why did it begin?
Helen of Sparta was taken by Paris back to Troy. It started the Trojan War in an effort to get her back to Sparta.
What was the Trojan Horse?
A hollow horse given by the Greeks to Troy as a “gift”. Inside were Greek warriors who once inside the gates of Troy, came out and opened the gates so the Greeks could sneak in and defeat Troy.
Where was the “greatest Alexandria” in Alexander the Great’s empire located?
The greatest Alexandria was the one in Egypt at the base of the Nile Delta. It is where the Library of Alexandria was built.
