alliance
each member nation agrees to come to the military aid and defense of the other member nations in the event that they are attacked
alliance
Examples: Triple Alliance, Triple Entente
militarism
belief that a country should use military force to gain power and to achieve its goals; “might makes right”
militarism
Example: Germany investing heavily in its Navy to compete with Great Britain.
nationalism
loyalty to country first, often to an extreme and biased degree sometimes leading to the hatred of outsiders
nationalism
Example: The Black Hand was a group that wanted to establish Serbian independence, leading it to hate Austria-Hungary and plot the assassination of Franz Ferdinand
propaganda
information—facts, arguments, rumors, half-truths, or lies—to influence public opinion
propaganda
Used by the Wilson administration to create public support for the war. Many posters advertising all aspects of the war to the American public.
imperialism
gaining political and economic control of other areas, usually by force
imperialism
Example: Britain, Russia, and Germany competing to establish colonies in Africa and Asia to compete for power and influence.
neutrality
refusal to take part in a war between other powers
neutrality
The U.S. policy from 1914 - 1917. The U.S. did not get involved because it feared it would not be supported by different immigrant groups within the U.S.
