Mussolini to Italy
1925: Mussolini declared dictator- Italy invades Ethiopia in May 1936- Rome-Berlin Axis becomes Axis powers in October 1936
Hitler to Germany- Beginning of Holocaust
1933: Hitler= apart of the Nazi street gang- tries to rebel against Germany’s leader, but sent to jail- while in jail he writes a book called Mein Kampf which mapped out the Holocaust- democracy made him chancellor in 1933 after the book becomes popular- when he is in power, he executes people who are against him in politics
U.S Neutrality Acts
1935-1939: America doesn’t allow foreign ships to come into the U.S- in 1939 German ship St. Louis sailed from Germany to Cuba- Cuba refused to allow the ship to land- U.S and Canada didn’t want to admit the passengers- they land in Europe where Hitler was waiting for them- they were sent to concentration camps- the U.S also had restrictions on immigration that prevented Europeans from entering
Munich Agreement
September 1938: Hitler needs to convince Great Britain and France that he’s not an enemy- Munich Agreement- Hitler can keep what he took, as long as he promises he won’t take more
German Invasion of Poland
September 1939: Germany invades Poland- huge invasion- tanks, planes, armored trucks, etc- Poland is a neutral country- when a neutral country is invaded, war must be declared- WWII begins
Battle of Dunkirk
May-June 1940: Germany invades France, and by June they surrender- the Battle of Dunkirk- successful retreat- Britain has to get out of France and escape back to the island of Great Britain
Battle of Britain
June-September 1940: As soon as Dunkirk ends, Germany controls France- easier to bomb Britain now- the Battle of Britain- nightly bombing missions carried out by Germans- entirely an air battle- Germany chooses to bomb at night in order to make the British tired and drain morale Luftwaffe (German air force) vs. the Royal Air Force- Germans add horns to their plane to add a shocking effect to them- civilians were especially targeted during the bombings- they hide in the metro systems
U.S Lend-Lease Act
March 1941: Applies to Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China- U.S can lend/sell war materials
Operation Barbarossa
June 1941: Russia sucks out 2 million troops out of Germany- 2,000 mile front- largest land invasion in human history- all is well at first, until winter hits- Hitler’s overconfidence is the reason for many soldiers dying- many freeze to death because Hitler said not to pack anything- he also expected to be through with the invasion faster
Atlantic Charter
August 1941: America solidifies best friend status with Great Britain- they agree that no more future wars for expansion would occur
