Part ONE: set in oran…the book starts off with mentioning thousands of rats dying, but when one patient dies the idea of a plague is brought up. At first few believe the theory, but within days many are brought to the hospital…town eventually closed off once the # of deaths reaches 30

Part TWO: town sealed off and easiest form of communication cut off…some try to flee others use this as a way to elevate social status by backing the plague by religious beliefs. The doctors are the only ones trying to help until Rambert eventually tries

Part THREE: situation worsens

Part FOUR: some close off and some flourish…antiplague serum tried, but more deaths arise- Grand get plague but survives and deaths decline

Part FIVE: Feb gates open but many characters have died… “more things to admire in men than to despise”
