Christian
There are many different groups of Christians who all believe Jesus is the son of God.
The Bible is their holy book.
Church
The Church is the name of the building where Christians worship.
It is also used to describe the Christian community.
Roman Catholic
Roman Catholic’s are Christians.
They have the Pope as the head of their Church.
Magisterium
The Magisterium is how the Pope and bishop’s interpret the Bible for Catholic’s today.
They are guided by the Holy Spirit.
A Sacrament
There are seven sacraments in the Catholic Church.
Sacraments are ways in which Christians can receive God’s help and love.
Holy Week
This is the last week in the life of Jesus.
It starts on Palm Sunday and ends at Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.
Miracles
Something which seems to break a law of Science.
This makes you think only God could have done it.
The Messiah
The ‘anointed one.’
Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah who saved humans from sin and brought them closer to God.
The Gospels
The story of Jesus’ life and teachings found in the first four books of the New Testament.
The four gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Jesus’ Commandment
Jesus taught to love God and to love your neighbour.
He said this was the greatest commandment.
The Golden Rule
This is a teaching of Jesus.
We need to treat others the way we would like to be treated.
Parables
A story with a hidden meaning.
They were told by Jesus to help people understand God’s message.
Religion
Having a belief in a god or a deity.
There are many different religions in the world.
Worship
A way people show their faith in God.
This can happen in a place of worship like a Temple or at home.
Sikhism
A religion that believes in one God.
It was founded by Guru Nanak.
Hinduism
A religion founded in India.
Hindus believe in one God who has many forms.
Prayer
A way people communicate with God.
This is usually done through words.
Piety
This means to be ‘devout’ or ‘dutiful’.
People can show their devotion and love for God by praying to Him.
Lord’s Prayer
The prayer given by Jesus to his followers.
It is also known as the ‘Our Father’.
Hail Mary
A Catholic Christian prayer to the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
The Hail Mary is said as part of the rosary.
Covenant
A special promise made between God and his people.
God made covenants with Noah, Moses and Abraham.
Abraham
An important prophet to Jews, Christians and Muslims.
As part of God’s covenant with Abraham, he promised him a land and many descendants.
Moses
A prophet from the Old Testament in the Bible.
He saved the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and received the Ten Commandments.
Ten Commandments
Ten central rules given to Moses by God.
They give advice about how to live a good life.
