State 'The Golden Rule for Grid References'
Step 1: follow with your finger along the bottom of the map (‘along the corridor’) to find the first two numbers whichare 62. Step 2: Follow with your finger up the side of the map (‘up the stairs’) to find the second two numbers which are 33. Step 3: Follow both lines to where they meet for a grid reference! We give the figure as 62,33
52
What does the scale of a map show?
``` The scale of a map shows how much you would have to enlarge your map to get the actual size of the piece of land you are looking at. For example, your map has a scale of 1:25 000, which means that every 1cm on the map represents 25 000 cm in real life. This is used to work out how far to walk or how far away things are ```
53
How would you find a distance 'as the crow flies'?
As the crow flies is the straight line distance between two points. Use a ruler and measure between the two points then multiply the measurement by the scale.
54
How would you find the distance 'by road'
By road is the actual distance you would need to travel to get from one point to another. Use a piece of paper and lay it along a straight section of the road from A to B. Mark A and B on the paper then pivot the paper from B along the next straight section and mark B to C. Continue until all points have been marked. Place the paper against the scale to find the distance
