Rite of passage
An event or occasion that marks a change in a person’s social life eg childbirth, coming of age, weddings, deaths
Bar /Bat Mitsvah
Son/daughter of the commandments. Jewish ceremony in which a child becomes an adult within the community. The son or daughter has the responsibility of keeping the 613 commandments

Hebrew
An ancient name for the Jewish people and their language
Kiddish
A blessing recited over wine on Shabbat, Jewish holidays and other happy occasions
Orthodox
Jews who maintain traditional Jewish beliefs and practices based on the Torah and Talmud
Reform
Jews who question some orthodox beliefs and traditions and follow a more liberal modern form of Judaism
B’rit bat
Ceremony in which reformed Jews welcome baby girls into the covenant
Yad
A pointer used when reading the Torah scroll to prevent damage
Tallith
A fringed shawl made from wool or silk worn by Jewish adults for prayer. The fringe is to remind Jews of the commandments
Tefillin
Straps and boxes worn on the forehead and arms containing part of the Torah
Yarmulke
A cap worn by Jews during prayer to show respect for God

A section of the Torah read during a synagogue service. it is written and read in Hebrew.
