Year 9 Recap Flashcards
(26 cards)
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Movement — E.g. Ability to change position
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Respiration — E.g. Release of energy from food
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Sensitivity — E.g. Ability to detect changes in the environment and respond
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Growth — E.g. Increasing in size
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Reproduction — E.g. Produce offspring
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Excretion — E.g. Removal of harmful waste from cells
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Nutrition — E.g. Obtains food
What does MRS GRENC stand for?
Control — E.g. Ability to keep internal conditions constant
How many living things kingdoms are there?
Five — Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protoctists, Prokaryotes
What is the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes?
Eukaryotes have a nucleus and are often multicellular
Prokaryotes have no nucleus and are always unicellular
What are the levels of organisation in an organism? (Smallest to largest)
Organelles — Cells — Tissues — Organs — Organs Systems — Organism
What is an organelle? Give an example
A membrane-bound structure within a cell that performs a certain function — E.g. Cell wall
What is a cell? Give an example
The smallest unit of life made up of a group of organelles — E.g. Animal cell
What are tissues? Give an example
A group of specialised cells that have a similar function — E.g. Muscle tissue
What is an organ system? Give an example
Groups of organs that carry out a particular function — E.g. Nervous system
What is an organism? Give an example
All the organ systems working together in a living ‘thing’
What organelles does a plant cell contain?
Nucleus — Mitochondria
Cell wall — Cell membrane
Chloroplasts — Cytoplasm
Ribosomes — (Permanent) vacuole
What organelles does an animal cell contain?
Nucleus — Ribosomes
Mitochondria — Cytoplasm
Cell membrane
What is the calculation for magnification?
Magnification = Image size / Actual size
What are the steps for calculating magnification?
- Measure the image size using a ruler in mm
- Convert mm into micrometers (μm)
- Divide answer by actual size
Are fungi unicellular or multicellular? What is the exception?
Fungi are multicellular, except yeasts which is unicellular
What thread-like structures do Fungi create? What does this form?
They create hyphae which, as a group, forms mycelium
What are Fungi cell walls made of?
Chitin
How do Fungi store carbohydrate?
As glycogen (same as animals)
