7
Q

Name two types of waves and define them

A

Transverse eaves: the wave particles oscillate at right angles to the waves direction ( eg wave at beach)

18
Q

What do ammeters measure?

A

Amps or amperes ( current )

19
Q

What do multimeters measure?

A

Resistance. ( ohms)

20
Q

Draw a series circuit name some properties

A

Current us same around circuit
Voltage is shared between the resistors
If a light bulb is added they all get duller
Minimum wire is required
Single switch
If one appliance fails the whole circuit fails

21
Q

Draw a parallel circuit name some properties

A

The current is shared between the branches
The voltage us the sane for each resistor
If a light bulb is added they all stay the same brightness
More wire required
If one appliance fails the others will still work
A house circuit is one large parallel circuit

22
Q

Draw common circuit symbols

A

Wire, switch open, closed, resistor, single cell, battery, light bulb

23
Q

What is a transformer?

A

A device that increases or decreases the voltage before use by an appliance .
It can also change alternating current into direct current for use in household appliances. Direct current is used by devices that can also be powered by batteries

24
Q

What type of power goes into Australian homes?

A

Alternating current 240-240V

25
Q

Describe the colours and uses of power wires n Australian homes?

A
Brown= active
Blue= neutral
Green/yellow= earth
26
Q

What does a safety switch do?

A

It is designed to turn the power off if a power overload or leakage occurs. Helps to prevent electrocution

27
Q

What does the resistance of a wire depend upon?

A
  1. The type of material the wire is made of
  2. The length of the wire
  3. The thickness of the wire
28
Q

What type of wire is use in circuits and why?

A

Copper due to its low electrical resistance

29
Q

What is a conductor?

A

A conductor allows a current to flow within them eg metal, Locke copper aluminium, nichrome

30
Q

What do insulators do?

A

Insulators do not allow electricity to flow within them, eg. Wood plastic rubber

31
Q

What is myopia?

A

An eye condition also called short sighted ness or near sighted

32
Q

What s hyperopia?

A

An eye condition also also know as far sightedness or farsighted

33
Q

What is the iris?

A

Coloured part of the eye

34
Q

What is the pupil?

A

Black part of the eye where the lens is

35
Q

What is the cornea?

A

Back part of the eye where the Image is focused

36
Q

What is the optic nerve?

A

Transmits signals between the eye and the brain

37
Q

Describe an electromagnet?

A

An electromagnet is bat described as a coil of copper wire into which an iron core has been inserted

38
Q

Describe electromagnetic radiation

A

Electromagnetic radiation is best described as an electric wave and a magnetic wave moving together at right angles to each other

39
Q

What type of light is responsible for sunburn and skin cancer?

A

Ultraviolet light. Known as UV

40
Q

What do we use infrared light for?

A

Heating purposes and night vision

41
Q

Name three types of variables

A
  1. Independent variables= the variable that the scientist chooses to change
  2. Dependent variable= the variable that the scientist chooses to measure
  3. Controlled variable= the list of variables that the scientist chooses to keep the same
42
Q

Why are X-ray’s useful?

A

X-rays are able to be used for medical purposes due to their ability to penetrate skin and tissue but not bone

43
