Year 9 Term 2 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the adaptations of a leaf of a plant for gas exchange?
Air spaces of spongy mesophyll(large surface area), thin tissues within the leaf stomata(short diffusion distance, carbon dioxide used immediately by photosynthesis cells(concentration gradient)
What are the adaptations of alveoli of the lungs
Large surface area,short diffusion distance,concentration gradient
Describe what happens in carbon dioxide practicle
It is used to compare the amount of co2 inhaled and exhaled, as you breath in the atmosphe air gets sucked in and as you breath out the exhaled air goes down and into the other tube, the exhaled air turns cloudy showing there is more co2
Describe what happens when you breath in
Diaphragm contracts and shortened becoming flattened,the intercostal muscles contract,rib cage moves up and out,volume in the lungs increase, pressure in the lungs decreases, air is inhaled, moving from high to low pressure
Describe what happens when you breath out
Diaphragm relaxes, moving up and returning to its dome shape, intercoastal muscles relax , rib cage moves down and in , the volume in the lungs decrease, pressure in the lungs increases,air is exhaled moving from low to high pressure
Describe what happens in the lime water practicle with yeast
As the yeast is deprived of oxygen the yeast respires anarobicaly so the lime water then turns cloudy as more co2 is released
What is the word equation of anaerobic respiration in yeast
Glucose-> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in exercise
Glucose-> energy+lactic acid
What is the balanced equation for aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
What happened when you smoke and get damages cilia
The mucus is not swept away from the lungs causing the passages to be blocked
What happens if you have irritations in the airways
You can get infections and can cause lung disease bronchitis
What is emphysema
There is a lot less surface area of lungs of an emphysema sufferer the symptoms are unable to exercise and when the alveoli are damaged by smoke the walls break down and fuse toghether
Carbon monoxide interferes with the bloods ability to transport oxygen around the body explain how
The carbon monoxide can combine with haemoglobin much more tightly than oxygen can then forming a compound called carboxyhaemoglobin therefore the blockage carries a lot less oxygen
What are the different levels of organisation within organisms
Organelles, cells, tissues, oreganos and organ systems
