what is repetition?
Repeating a phrase in a piece of writing.
What is an onomatopoeia?
A word that describes a noise.
What is alliteration?
Two or more words that start with the same letter.
What is a simile?
Comparing two words using like or as.
What is a metaphor?
Saying something is something that it’s not.
What is a hyperbole?
When you over exaggerate something.
What is a conjunction?
A connecting word. e.g. And, because.
What is a preposition?
Used before a noun. e.g. in, at, of, on, under, before.
What is an adverb?
Describes a verb. Ends in ly.
What is an anaphora?
When the first word of a stanza or verse is the same as another stanza or verse.
What is a chiasmus?
A phrase where the order of words is mirrored. e.g. the lady was a pig. The pig was a lady.
What is enjambment?
Missing punctuation at the end of multiple lines.
What is juxtaposition?
Two opposite ideas of phrases in the same text. e.g. he was terribly good.
What does visual mean?
You can see it.
What does tactile mean?
Tactile means that you can touch it.
What does olfactory mean?
That you can smell it.
What does gustatory mean
You can taste it.
What does aural mean?
You can hear it.
What is symbolism?
Something that represents something else.
What is a motif?
A repeated idea or symbol in a text.
What is an oxymoron?
Two words with opposite meanings right next to each other. e.g. pretty horrible.
What is an assonance?
A vowel rhyme. When the same vowel or sound is repeated.
