What is the tensile stress
It is the tensile force over the cross section area. This is measured in pascals or in Nm^-2
What is tensile strain
Tensile strain is the extension of the object over the original length of the object. This is an original so has no unit
What shape usually is the cross section area given as?
A circle, it usually gives the radius so remember to divide by 2
What is Yong’s Moduls
A consistent way of measuring how easy it is to extend a material. It is more accurate as it takes into account the volume of the shape.
How do you calculate Yong’s Modulus
Tensile stress / tensile strain
What unit is Yong’s Modulus measured in
Pa or NM^-2
What is the yield point
Where beyond the point a small increase of stress causes a large increase in strain
