Define youth
12-18 years of age; however, it should be acknowledged that classifications for the stage of youth can differ across agencies
Emotional development in youth
Refers to developing a full range of emotions, and learning appropriate ways of dealing with and expressing these emotions.
Social development in youth
Refers to the social skills and behaviors that are learnt from a young age.
Intellectual development in youth
Refers both to processes that occur within the brain and to the increasing complexity of the brain.
Biological determinants in youth eg. Genetics, hormones, body weight, the affects on development
Biological determinants are concerned with the body’s cells, tissues, organs and systems , and how they function.
Genetics- refers to the biological info that is passed down from parents to children.
Hormones are an example of biological determinant and are responsible for the process of puberty.
Maintaining a healthy body weight is beneficial for development during youth.
Explain the affects of the biological determinants eg. Genetics, hormones, body weight
Genetics - genes control many aspects of health and development. Physical appearance is determined by genetics, genetics determine sex.
Hormones - trigger puberty and results in the changes in physical development, also influence when and how quickly and individual develops, social dev. Can be affected by early puberty.
Body weight- young people either over or underweight may not be eating enough of the foods that provide the right nutrition, this means physical development is not achieved

Refers to the changes that occur to the body and its systems.
