zExtra Flashcards
(29 cards)
What conditions do plants have to be adapted to in tropical rainforests?
High amounts of rainfall and high temperatures.
Intensense competition for light.
How are plants adapted to the rainforest?
butress roots
waxy cuticle and poinyted leaf tips
smooth, thin layer of bark.
Climbing vines/plants
How are buttress roots an adaptation?
Big roots that help support the tree trunks and gather more nutrients as they go further and deeper.
How is a waxy cuticle and pointed leaf tips an adaptaion?
funnel water off with the pointed tip, stops bacteria growing in the leaf.
resist the absorbtion of rain and prevents microorganism entering.
All to prevent damage to the plant.
How is climbing plants an adaptation?
They climb on plants to compete for sunlight.
How is smooth, thin bark an adaptation?
Increases surface run off.
No need to insulate in hot climate.
What are animals in the ttropical rainforest adapted to do?
Find food
Escape predators
What are adaptations to the tropical rainforest by animals?
Sharp sense of smell wings made of skin strong limbs camouflage nocturnal
How are sloths adapted to the rainforest?
They are nocturnal so that they preserve energy, and only move or hunt when temperatures in the rainforest are lower at night.
How are flying squirells adapted to the rainforest?
They have evolved wings to help climb trees, instead of strong limbs.
They have wings made of their skin to glide between trees.
How are plants adapted to the Taiga?
Evergreen conifer trees.
How is the tree being evergreen an adaptation.
The trees capture sunlight so they can photosynthesise all year round.
How is having pine needles an adaptation?
In the Taiga
Pine needles instead of leaves reduce the surface area of the leaf and means less water is lost from the tree.
How is having cone-shaped trees an adaptation?
They don’t store much snow on thier leaves/branches.
Too much snow could break the the tree.
What 4 adaptations are there of animals of the taiga?
Small size animals to conserve heat.
HIbernations save enrgy during long winters.
Migrations away from cold conditions and to find food.
White camoflage to hide from predators in the snow.
What animals hibernate in the taiga?
Brown bears
What animals have a small size or a small surface area to volume ratio?
Lynxes, weasels and wolves.
What animals migrate?
Primary consumers to where plants are.
Secondary consumers to where prey are.
Birds to avoid the coldest months.
What animals have white fur for camouflage?
artic hair.
What colour is the soil in the rainforest?
The soil in the rainforest is red because it is rich in iron.
Where do epiphytes get their nutrients from?
Epiphytes get their nutrients from the air and water.
Where do the leaves and flowers of the lianas grow?
The leaves and flowers of the lianas grow in the canopy, not the shrub layer.
How does having stomata help cacti survive?
Stomata only open at night. Carbon dioxide is taken in at night and stored for use during the day.
Found in valleys in the stem.
How does having spines instead of leaves help cacti survive?
It minimises the surface area of the plant and protect the stem from herbivores.
It also stores water.
