(15 cards)
Anomia
Difficulty retrieving the names of objects, people, locations, concepts, and actions.
Anomic Aphasia:
An aphasia characterized by a relatively isolated impairment of naming/word finding.
Brain plasticity:
The ability of the brain to change in various ways to compensate for loss of function due to damage.
Echolalia:
The involuntary repetition of someone else’s words.
Embolus/Embolism:
Sudden blocking of a blood vessel by a blood clot, fatty deposit, or bubble of air that has travelled from another location via the blood current.
Hemorrhagic Stroke:
A type of stroke due to a cerebral blood vessel bursting and causing blood to escape and flood surrounding brain tissue.
Lexical
Pertaining to the words/vocabulary of a language and their meanings.
Phonological:
Pertaining to the speech sounds of a language and the rules for combining such sounds to make meaning.
Pure Word Deafness:
A rare syndrome in which the patient can hear but cannot process speech sounds for meaning, although his or her own spontaneous speech, reading, and writing skills are intact.
Semantics:
The study of language meaning.
Stroke
Any disruption of blood flow to the brain. Also called cerebrovascular accident. There are three types: thrombotic, embolic, and hemorrhagic.
Thrombosis
A plug or clot in a blood vessel formed by the coagulation of blood or buildup of atherosclerotic or fatty plaque.
A nonfluent aphasia similar to Broca’s aphasia and characterized by better verbal output when repeating phrases/sentences than when spontaneously producing them.
Transcortical Motor Aphasia:
A fluent aphasia similar to Wernicke’s aphasia and characterized by poor comprehension with better repetition abilities than spontaneous speech abilities.
Transcortical Sensory Aphasia:
A small and temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain that does not cause permanent brain damage.
Transient Ischemic Attack:
