Made up of two main parts:
- Plasma (55%)
- Formed elements (White and Red blood cells, platelets) (45%)

Plasma

A
  • Fluid portion of blood
  • Contains food nutrients, waste, hormones, antibodies

Blood proteins:
- Albumins, osmotic pressure
- Globulins, immunity
- Fibrinogens, blood clotting

Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)

A
  • No nucleus (more room for hemoglobin)
  • Made in bone marrow and destroyed in spleen
  • Hemoglobin gives red colour, picks up oxygen
  • With oxygen is called oxyhemoglobin
  • With carbon dioxide is called carboxyhemoglobin

White Blood Cells (Leukocytes)

  • Are phagocytes (“cell eaters”)
  • can change shape and destroy germs by phagocytosis and digesting them

  • Not complete cells, but fragments of cells
  • Produced in bone marrow
  • Helps clot blood and reducing chance of infection
