03 Circulatory System - Blood Flow Flashcards
(11 cards)
1
Q
Components of the Circulatory System
A
- Heart
- Blood vessels
2
Q
Heart
A
- Directly under the breastbone
- Pumps blood through the body
- Things related to the heart are called cardiac or coronary
3
Q
Vessels
A
Three types of blood vessels:
Arteries
Capillaries
Veins
4
Q
Arteries
A
- carry blood AWAY from the heart
- When blood is pumped by the heart, arteries expand as blood is forced through them
- Most carry oxygenated blood
- Large artery leaving the heart is called the Aorta
- Smallest arteries are called arterioles
5
Q
Capillaries
A
- Form when arterioles branch out
- Allows gasses and nutrients to diffuse across them
- Cover organs and are the site of gas and nutrient exchange
- Can carry both oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
6
Q
Veins
A
- carry blood TOWARDS the heart
- Most carry deoxygenated blood
- Smallest vein is called a venule
- Formed when capillaries fuse together
7
Q
Oxygen Exception
A
Arteries carry blood with oxygen and veins carry blood without but there are two exceptions
Pulmonary Artery
- Carries blood from heart to lungs
- Blood is deoxygenated
- Going to get more oxygen
Pulmonary Vein
- Carries blood from lungs to heart
- blood is oxygenated
- Blood is returning to the heart to be pumped through the body
8
Q
Blood Flow (aka Circulation)
A
Circulation can be divided into two distinct parts:
- pulmonary circuit
- systemic circuit, coronary circuit apart of systemic circuit
9
Q
The Pulmonary Circuit
A
- low pressure system
- Get oxygen and
release carbon dioxide
10
Q
The Systemic Circuit
A
- high-pressure system
- Give oxygen to body cells, remove wastes, give nutrients to the body, send hormonal signals
11
Q
The Coronary Circuit
A
- Give oxygen and nutrients to heart cells and remove wastes from heart cells
