02 Plant Anatomy Flashcards
(15 cards)
Body systems for Plants
Shoot system and root system
Shoot System
All parts above ground
Root System
All parts below ground
Shoot System Organs
-Stem
-Leaves
-Flower/Fruit
Root System Organs
Roots
Root System Organs: Roots
-Anchor plant in soil
-Makes sure it doesn’t fall over
-gains water from soil and moves to stem
-Stores food made in other parts of plant
Shoot System Organs: Stem
-transports water and nutrients throughout plant
-supports rest of the shoot system
Shoot System Organs: Leaves
Converts light energy into the chemical energy of food through photosynthesis
Shoot System Organs: Flowers
-Reproductive structure of plant
-Produces seeds through sexual reproduction
stomena: male organs -> consist of anther and filament -> produce pollen (male sex cells)
pistil: female organs -> consist of ovary, style, and stigma ->eggs located in ovary (female sex cells)
When pollen and an egg unite, the fertilized egg becomes a seed
Major Plant Tissues
1)Dermal/epidermis tissue
2) Ground tissue
3) Vascular tissue
4) Meristematic tissue
Major Plant Tissues: Dermal tissue/epidermis
-forms covering over plant’s organs
- by this, protects inner tissues from damage
-consists of epidermal cells including guard cells
Major Plant Tissues: Ground tissue
Consists of: Parenchyma cells, Collenchyma cells, Sclerenchyma cells
Major Plant Tissues: Vascular tissue
Consists of:
-xylem cells: moves water up to plant
-phloem cells: moves sugars when needed growth and metabolism
Major Plant Tissues: Meristematic tissue
-responsible for plant growth
-Made of meristematic cells (undifferentiated cells that can become any cell)
The growth of plant tissues
-Rapidly dividing meristematic cells at the tips of roots and branches cause upward, downward and outward growth of plants
-A bud is a swelling of the stem that contains the meristem for new tissues
-Most active growth occurs near the terminal bud (top of the plant or ends of the roots)
-The lateral buds are dormant but can give rise to new branches, leaves and flowers
