Sugar Movement in Vascular Plants Flashcards
(4 cards)
Phloem
-where plant transports sugars and other assimilates
-up and down plant (wherever needed)
-grouped in vascular bundle; in middle of leaf, stem, root
Companion cells
-phloem tissues
-control transport in sieve tube elements (another phloem tissue - next to companion cells)
-control centre for actual flowing tube
Active Transport
-process where movement of molecules occurs from region of low concentration to region of high concentration against a gradient
-companion cells contain many mitochondria because phloem requires active transport to move sap in translocation (transfer of assimilates through plant)
Sources and Sinks
-2 cells play roles in transport of solutions of phloem
-source cell produces sucrose and load it into the phloem
-sink cell unload sucrose from phloem
-used by translocation
