In Christianity, what is atonement?
The process by which men and women are reconciled with God though the death of Jesus on the cross.
Why was reconciliation necessary?
Because all people have sinned.
In genesis 3, how did sin first come into the world?
When the devil successfully tempted the first man and woman, Adam and Eve.
What sin do we all carry that gives us the need to be reconciled?
Original sin.
What is one model of Jesus’ death reconciling mankind?
“Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”
Is there a single doctrine of atonement?
No.
What is expiation?
Removing guilt by paying a penalty.
What is propitiation?
Turning away wrath by making an offering.
What are the 2 technical terms used in theories of atonement?
-expiation
-propitiation
Explain Christus victor.
-It is believed that humanity is bound by the power of death and by the devil.
-For Aulen the ransom model is about God conquering hostile powers and liberating people from the bondage of sin and death.
-this theory also links to early Christian beliefs about Jesus’ dissent into hell before the resurrection to proclaim his victory over death.
Explain penal substitution.
-Jesus set human beings free from being punished for their sins by taking that punishment upon himself.
-this model is based on the book of Isiah which speaks about the messiah as a suffering servant.
Give an example of penal substitution.
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us” - Galatians.
Quote Aulen about Christus victor.
“The work of Christ is first and formost a victory over the powers that hold mankind in bondage: sin, death and the devil.”
Explain moral example (atonement).
-This model says that Jesus dies, not to appease or placate God but show human beings the depth of God’s love for them.
-the purpose was to leas people to people to repentance. This is favoured by liberal theologians.
Why is the Nicene creed important?
it is the earliest, and represents the essence of, Christian doctrine.
Where did the Nicene originate?
At the Council of Nicaea which was named after the council was convened at the city of Nicaea.
What is the Nicene Creed?
a statement of belief widely used in Christian liturgy.
why does the Nicene creed have that name?
because it was originally adopted by the first council of Nicaea then it was amended at the first council of contantinople.
