049 Unit 4 & 5 Flashcards
(34 cards)
fossil fuels
are made from decomposing plants and animals.
Nonrenewable Resource
oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy
Hydropower
a renewable source of energy that generates power by using a dam or diversion structure to alter the natural flow of a river or other body of water.
Solar power
converting energy from the sun into power.
Wind energy
the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity.
Renewable energy
natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished
Water Pollution
the contamination of water sources by substances which make the water unusable for drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities.
Water Pollution
the contamination of water sources by substances which make the water unusable for drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities.
Wastewater
human waste, food scraps, oils, soaps and chemicals.
Artificial Eutrophication
Occurs when human activity introduces increased amounts of these nutrients
Point -Source Pollution
Any single identifiable source of pollution from which pollutants are discharged, such as pipe, ditch, ship or factory smokestack
Nonpoint -Source Pollution
It happens when runoff rain and snowmelt carries pollutants into waterways such as rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands, and even groundwater.
Hazardous Waste
Is waste with properties that make it potentially dangerous or harmful to human health or the environment.
Biodegradable
Is a substance or object capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms.
Leachate
Is water that has percolated through a solid and leached out some of the constituents.
Smog
Is a fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.
Acid Precipitation
It precipitation like rain or snow having increased acidity caused by environmental factors like atmospheric pollutants.
Biomagnification
Is the concentration of toxins in organism as a result of its ingesting other plants or animals in which the toxins are more widely disbursed
Incinerator
Is an apparatus for burning waste material, especially industrial waste, at high temperature until it is reduced to ash.
Thermal Pollution
A rise in the temperature of rivers or lakes that is injurious to water dwelling life and is caused by the disposal of heated
What is the main use of fossil fuels?
Fossil fuels are used to produce energy; in the home they are burned to produce heat, in large power stations they are used to produce electricity and they are also used to power engines.
What are the three types of fossil fuels?
Coal, oil, or natural gas
What are the advantages of using fossil fuels?
- Fossil fuels can generate a large amount of electricity at a single location.
- They can be found very easily.
- They are cost effective.
- Transportation of oil and gas can be done easily through pipelines.
What are the disadvantages of fossil fuels?
It can contribute to climate change. Fossil fuels are the main driver of global warming. Non-renewable. Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy -unlike solar power, geothermal, and wind energy
