They are repeated multiplications.
Solve:
½ + ¾*5/3 - (¼)²
(1) (¼)² = 1/16
(2) ¾*5/3 = 5/4
(3) 8/16 + 20/16 - 1/16 = 27/16
What is a variable in an equation?
It represents an unknown quantity.
In 3x^5, what is 3?
3 is a coefficient.
A coefficient is a constant by which a variable is multiplied
How do you add 3x^5 + 2x^4?
You can’t simplify them because their exponents are different.
**Solve:
3x^5 + 2x^5**
5x^5
You just add the coefficients because the exponents are identical.
**Solve (simplify):
7xy² + 3x²y**
You can’t. Their variables are not identical.
**Solve(simplify):
7xy² + 5xy²**
12xy²
Solve:
a^3 * a^5
a^(3+5) = a^8
**Solve(simplify):
a^5/a^3**
= a^(5-3) = a²
**Solve(simplify):
a^3/a^5**
= a^(3-5) = a-²= 1 /a²
What is a^0?
It is 1, unless a = 0
