1-6 Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the types of energy that we are studying in class?
Thermal
Nuclear
Chemical
Light
Mechanical
Electrical
Gravitational
Sound
A scientist increases the temperature of a mixture to produce a new chemical.
Thermal-Chemical
For each example identify how energy is converted.
The sun fuses together hydrogen and helium to produce rays of light.
Nuclear-light
A person rubs their hands together to increase their temperature.
Mechanical-Thermal
A power outlet causes a fan to spin.
electrical-mechanical
Give an example where mechanical energy is turned into sound energy.
For example when you clap your hands or when you speak.
Melker wants to have an infinite amount of light from his lamp, so he decides to shine it on a solar panel which then turns it into electricity to power the lamp. Will Melker be able to have infinite light from his lamp? Explain your answer.
As the solar panel is not very energy efficient it will not make enough energy for the light, so it will slowly become less energy (less light) until it runs out.
What is happening at each point in the diagram?
Fuel produces heat (coal, nuclear, biofuel).
Water evaporates into steam (thermal).
Steam spins a turbine (mechanical).
The turbine spins magnets to produce electricity (mechanical-electricity).
Electricity travels on wires to be used.
What type(s) of energy are found at step 3? How do you know?
Mechanical energy is used because the steam moves the turbine, and movement is mechanical energy.
Where is one step with kinetic energy in the diagram? How do you know? What type of kinetic energy is it?
The third one, because something that has kinetic energy is something in motion and seeing as the turbines are spinning they are moving, therefore, they have kinetic energy.
