What is a population?
The whole set of items that are of interest
What is a census?
Something which observes or measures every member of the population
What is a sample?
A selection of observations taken from a subset of the population which is used, to find out information about the population as a whole.
What is a sampling unit?
An individual unit of a population
What is a sampling frame?
A numbered/ named ordered list of sampling units
Compare a census with a sample
Census: Gives a completely accurate result, representative of the whole population, but it’s time consuming and expensive, hard to process large quantity of data and the testing process may destroy the item.
Sample: Less time consuming and expensive, fewer have to respond and less data to process, but data not as accurate or sample may not be large enough to give information about small sub-groups of the population.
